How to Apply Mascara Correctly

No look is complete without a coat or two of mascara. The problem with mascara is, if not applied correctly it can look like a spider crawled up on your eye and decided to stay a while. Clumpy lashes are not attractive lashes, so follow the steps below to learn how to apply mascara correctly and achieve a clump-free look that will leave your eyes looking amazing.

What You’ll Need:

  • Mascara – Choose one that addresses your specific concerns. If your lashes are too short, pick one that lengthens your lashes. We like Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara because it naturally makes lashes look longer and thicker, and resists clumping. Go here to get yours.
  • Eyelash comb – This helps separate lashes.
  • Eyelash curler – Adds a bit of curl to the lashes so they appear longer.
  • Mirror

  1. Apply other makeup first. The last step in your makeup application routine should be the mascara.
  2. Curl your lashes. Using the eyelash curler, gently curl your lashes to make them appear longer. Be careful not to pinch your eyelid in between the pads of the curler. You don’t have to squeeze hard or hold it for long; just a few seconds will do.
  3. Open the mascara and wipe off the excess. When you pull the wand out of the tube, you’ll notice clumps of mascara around the brush. Get rid of it by either gently dabbing the brush on a piece of paper towel, or by scraping the brush on the edge of the mascara tube. Never pump the wand in and out of the tube because air can get trapped inside and dry out the product.
  4. Apply the mascara. Stand in front of a mirror and look up slightly. This will cause you to lower your eyelids to see yourself in the mirror. Your upper eyelashes are easily accessible in this position. Place the brush against the base of your upper lashes and gently draw it upward toward the tips. Wiggle the brush a bit as you go to help separate lashes. Keep going in this manner until all lashes are covered.
  5. Use the eyelash comb. Before the mascara has had a chance to dry completely, use the eyelash comb to separate lashes and get rid of clumps. Start at the base of your lashes and gently pull through to tips. Repeat steps two through five on the other eye.
  6. Apply mascara to lower lashes. This step is optional, but if you want to define your eyes even more, hold the wand vertically so that just the tip is being used. Gently draw it along the lower lash line to add a bit of color. Clean up any smudges with a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover.
