How to Treat Windburned Skin with La Roche-Posay

Windburned Skin

Have you ever spent time outdoors on a windy day and after coming in your face feels hot and maybe itchy? If you look in the mirror, your face is probably red, too. Your skin is probably suffering from windburn, which can be painful for several hours after the exposure. Although many people associate windburn with winter weather, it can happen anytime it is windy out, so here are a few tips on how to treat and prevent it with La Roche-Posay for your next outdoor excursion.

Windburn is sometimes mistaken for sunburn, and while it’s completely possible to have both at the same time, it’s important that you never leave the house without sunscreen. Sunscreen won’t keep you from getting windburn (the wind actually saps your skin of moisture causing the problem), but sunscreen does help keep your skin moisturized and protected from the sun, so it’s a good idea to include it in your every day skincare routine. We like La Roche-Posay’s Hydraphase UV because it has superior moisturizing properties and it contains sunscreen.

If you find yourself suffering from windburn, there are a couple of things you can do to help the healing process along.

  1. Use a mild, non-irritating cleanser like La Roche-Posay Lipidar Syndet to gently wash your face. Don’t use any washcloths or scrubbing brushes until your face heals – just use your fingers to work the cleanser in small circles and rinse with lukewarm water.
  2. Avoid exfoliants and toners until skin heals and redness goes away. These will only dry your skin out further, causing more damage.
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Windburned skin is dehydrated skin and it needs a little help rehydrating. Use a good moisturizer like La Roche-Posay Nutritic Very Dry Skin Cream 5% Biolipids to keep your skin moist. This ultra-rich cream helps restore the skin’s natural barrier.

If you know you’re going to be spending time outdoors on a windy day, try to prevent windburn before it begins by applying a heavy moisturizer before going out, and of course, don’t forget the sunscreen. If you notice during the outing that your skin is becoming flaky or showing signs of dryness, reapply.
