How Vitamin C Got Its Start in Skincare

This little piggy went to market.

This little piggy stayed home.

This little piggy had roast beef.

This little piggy had none.

And, this little piggy…..donated its time and skin to the advancement of skincare science.

No, we haven’t lost our minds, but you’re probably wondering what pigs have to do with skincare, aren’t you? Well, it’s an interesting story, to say the least.

More than 20 years ago, an enthusiastic Duke University scholar published a paper that showed how a form of vitamin C called L-ascorbic acid reduced UVB damage when applied topically to the backs of hairless pigs. The ground-breaking discovery proved that photodamage, or sun spots, could be diminished with the use of vitamin C. This knowledge led to further research and today, many skincare products, including the ones created by Cellex-C use potent doses of vitamin C in their ingredients.

Why Vitamin C?

Skincare products contain many different forms of vitamin C: ascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, retinyl ascorbate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Despite its many forms, there is no “best” form of topically-applied vitamin C. Products that contain a vitamin C content of 0.3% to 10% are recommended for superior anti-aging results.

Vitamin C in skincare products is beneficial to healthy, radiant skin. It:

  • Protects skin cells and the skin’s support structure from UV-related damage.
  • Improves the appearance of sun-damaged skin.
  • Strengthens the skin’s barrier response.
  • Reduces inflammation.
  • Enhances effectiveness of peels and microdermabrasion.
  • Lessens hyperpigmentation.
  • Boosts the effectiveness of sunscreen.

So, as you can see, those little piggies made a huge impact on the skincare industry. Without them, we would have never known the benefits of vitamin C to reverse photoaging caused by UV damage. Vitamin C is a proven, beneficial addition to any skincare regimen.
