Take Care of your Hands

When you ask someone about their skincare regimen, they often tell you about how they take care of their face; what products they use for anti-aging or acne control. They may even tell you how they keep the skin on their body soft and supple. What many neglect to talk about or even consider is their hands. Your hands take a beating every day and can experience the effects of aging just like your face and the skin on other parts of the body – sometimes even more so. Here are a few tips to help you keep your hands soft and young looking despite the rough treatment they inadvertently receive.

First and foremost, the number one rule for younger looking skin is to wear sunscreen – every single day. You know it’s important for your face, but it’s just as important for the backs of your hands. Your hands are one of the first places “age spots” form, and that’s due to their constant exposure to the sun. Never leave home without a layer of high SPF on the backs of your hands, no matter the season or weather.

Second, wear protective gloves designed for the task at hand when conducting heavy housework or chores outside. Rubber gloves are a must when washing dishes to keep the alkaline in dish soap from drying out your skin. If you’re a gardener, always wear gloves when playing in the dirt, and if you enjoy outdoor¬†activities¬†in the winter, wear gloves then, too. The key to keeping your hands soft and young looking is keep the moisture in and drying agents out.

Soap can be very drying for your hands. Even those designed specifically for the hands can be damaging. Make sure to read labels and choose a mild soap that has a low pH level and wash your hands in lukewarm (never hot) water. Blot your hands dry rather than rub, and avoid those hot air dryers in public restrooms if possible.

Use a good lotion like Dermalogica MultiVitamin Hand & Nail Treatment (here) each time you wash your hands. This will help keep your hands moisturized, protect against nail splitting and provide an invisible layer of protection. Soft, hydrated skin looks younger, so don’t neglect the lotion after washings.

Taking care of the skin on your hands is just as important as taking care of the skin on your face. Both areas have the ability to either make you feel older or younger, so take the time to treat them both right to look and feel younger.
